Production of tungsten oxide layers with electrochromic and/or gasochromic properties on substrates comprises: (A) feeding a combustible gas (1) and oxidizer (2) through a control system (3) to a mixer (6); adding a precursor (4) to the mixer; and (B) feeding the mixture to a burner so that the oxidized product from the precursor is deposited on the substrate. Independent claims are included for: (A) use of the coated substrates to produce electrochromic cells with a conducting layer below them, an electrolyte layer adjacent to them and a transparent substrate with a conducting structure or layer; and (B) use of the coated substrates to produce gasochromic cells with the coated substrate and another substrate, a cavity between them being filled with a hydrogen-containing mixture produced by a catalyst.
