<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and surely purge HC adsorbed by HC adsorbent in an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The HC adsorbent 20 is provided in a bypass passage 18 bypassing a main exhaust passage 12 of the internal combustion engine 10 in downstream side of a rear stage catalyst 16. A channel selector valve 26 is changed over to make exhaust gas in a downstream of the rear stage catalyst 16 flow in the bypass passage 18 and is supplied to the HC adsorbent 20 when HC is adsorbed. Exhaust gas between a front stage catalyst 14 and the rear stage catalyst 16 is taken out by a high temperature gas supply passage 38 and is supplied to the HC adsorbent 20 when HC adsorbed by the HC adsorbent 20 is purged. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
