PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive device capable of causing a driving object to be displaced at a minute speed, irrespective of the fluctuations of a load. SOLUTION: Upon completion of image formation processing, a printer to which this device is applied drives a carriage using a motor, allows the carriage to move toward a capping position and caps a recording head mounted on the carriage. In moving the carriage to the capping position, the printer repeats operations of dropping an input current quantity I to the motor to an initial value Ikeep, every time a position coordinate P(n) of the carriage increases by one and then gradually increasing the current I from the initial value, thereby moving the carriage at a minute speed. Meanwhile, when the carriage moves back due to the fluctuation of a load, the initial value Ikeep is increased to deal with it; in this case, the position coordinate immediately before the retreat is stored, an operation of increasing the initial value Ikeep is suspended, until the carriage reaches this position; and the initial value Ikeep is increased, when the carriage reaches the position immediately prior to the treatment.
