<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent liquid crystal display device which causes neither light leak nor color change even under environmental changes of temperature and humidity, by providing a transparent film which has substantially no optical anisotropy and substantially no difference between physical characteristics in a machine direction and those in a direction perpendicular thereto and ensures a small optical anisotropy change and small horizontal and vertical dimensional changes due to temperature and humidity changes. <P>SOLUTION: The transparent film has a tensile elastic modulus in a machine direction of 2.4×10<SP>9</SP>-4.9×10<SP>9</SP>N/m<SP>2</SP>, a tensile elastic modulus in a direction perpendicular to the machine direction of 2.3×10<SP>9</SP>-4.7×10<SP>9</SP>N/m<SP>2</SP>, a ratio of the tensile elastic modulus in the machine direction to the tensile elastic modulus in the direction perpendicular to the machine direction of 0.80-1.36, an in-plane retardation value Re of ≤20, and an absolute value of a film thickness-direction retardation value Rth of ≤25.
