PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical output controller and the control method thereof that can facilitate determination processing and control processing for an indication value and increase efficiency of table data stored in a memory regardless of materials and structures of a thin film heater and an optical waveguide and even when a plurality of single VOAs are integrated to high density. SOLUTION: When the target optical attenuation amount of an arbitrary path is set, a relation data table is referred to in S31 and an applied voltage Vatt[reference] to a single reference VOA is extracted in S32. In S33, a difference characteristic data table is referred to on the basis of path information specified by a host device and difference characteristic data d1[X-1] of the corresponding path are extracted from the difference characteristic data table in S34. In S35, Vatt[reference] and d1[X-1] are used to calculate a voltage Vatt[X-1] applied to the single VOA of a specified path.
