The invention relates to a method for producing homopolymers and copolymers of vinylphosphonic acid having a content of vinylphosphonic acid polymerized into it of at least 30% by weight, based on the overall weight of the homopolymer or copolymer, said method comprising the radical polymerization of a monomer composition that contains, based on the overall amount of the monomers in the monomer composition, a) > 30% by weight of vinylphosphonic acid in the form of its anhydride or an anhydride derivative or in the form of a mixture of vinylphosphonic acid and its anhydride or anhydride derivative (monomer a), and b) < 70% by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers that are different from vinylphosphonic acid (monomer b), the polymerization being carried out in a non-aqueous solvent or diluent. The invention also relates to the homopolymers and copolymers that are obtainable by this method.
