A process for preparing a compound of formula (I):cycloalkyl or benzyl, and wherein the phenyl moiety of said benzyl group is optionally substituted with one or two substituents each independently selected from halo, nitro, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkoxy, amino and trifluoromethyl, which comprises treating a solution of a compound of formula (II): <IMAGE> (II) wherein R is as defined for formula (I), and a halonitromethane in a first organic solvent, with a quaternary ammonium fluoride of formula (III): R1R2R3F4N+E,crc ++EE F+E,crc -+EE (III) wherein R1,R2,R3 and R4 are each independently selected from C1-C8 alkyl and benzyl, optionally in solution in a second organic solvent.
