PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road shape recognition apparatus for recognizing a road shape that can satisfactorily recognize the shape of roads having no white lines or roads having unclear white lines. SOLUTION: In a road shape detection system, lighting devices project a pattern image onto a road around a vehicle, and a signal processing device processes an image captured by a camera for capturing the pattern image to detect the shape of the pattern image and determine the shape of the road in accordance with the shape. The camera is spaced by a preset distance from the optical axes of the lighting devices. The road shape detection system projects the pattern image and recognizes the road shape by changes in the shape of the pattern image, and can thus satisfactorily recognize the shape of roads, including slope and irregularities, having no white lines or roads having unclear white lines.
