This invention provides a new compound having a characteristic one-dimensional tunnel structure and represented by a chemical composition formula H₂Ti₁₂O₂₅, and a process for producing the compound. There is also provided a lithium rechargeable battery which has excellent long-term charge/discharge cycle properties and is a promising battery which could realize a large capacity. The lithium rechargeable battery comprises an electrode as a construction member manufactured using the novel titanium oxide as an active material.
