The method involves replicating a negative structure (1') of a diffractive or macroscopic relief structure in a surface made of a thermoplastic material (3). Plastic sheets or the surface are attached between a heated embossing tool (4) e.g. die, and another surface of another thermoplastic material (2). The relief structure is casted in the latter surface, and the plastic sheets are pressed against the latter surface by the embossing tool. The plastic sheets are removed from the latter surface. An independent claim is also included for a sheet for decorative and packaging purposes comprising a layer of thermoplastic material.
