<p>An exemplary embodiment of a material removal tool (200, 300) has a housi ng (202) at a mating end (204), an extension (208) longitudinally extending from the housing (202) to a distal end (210), a plurality of spacers (218) a rranged along the extension (208), and a nut (212) at the distal end (210) o f the extension (208), wherein the plurality of spacers (218) are formed fro m a material having a Young's modulus of greater than about 1.5 times that o f steel. The spacers (218) along the extension (208) of the tool (200) place the stiffer material of the spacer at a location of greatest resistance to bending moments (i.e. highest sectional modulus). Optionally preloading and "built-in" relief points contribute to improved performance of the material removal tool (200, 300). A method of manufacturing a material removal tool ( 200, 300) and a method of machining a workpiece are also disclosed.</p> |
