PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve confidentiality, before photoelectric conversion of the image generated by illuminating an original, when reading the image of the original. SOLUTION: An image reader 10 is constituted of an illuminator 12 that illuminates the original to be read; a reflector 14 equipped with a plurality of reflecting surfaces 15 for optically receiving and reflecting an optical image generated by illuminating an original by means of an illuminator 12, wherein inclination angles of a plurality of reflecting surfaces 15 are variable; and a photoelectric converter 20, having an optical receiver 19 for receiving the optical image reflected at the reflector for optically converting the optically received image at the optical receiver 19; and a controller 16 for controlling the inclination angles at each of the plurality of reflecting surfaces 15. The controller 16 controls the inclination angles so that the optical image generated by illuminating the original by means of the illuminator 12 may be reflected in reading the original, in a direction received by the optical receiver 19; or the optical image may not optically received at the optical receiver 19.
