The method involves determining a parameter corresponding to a maximum instantaneous performance from ambient variables of a vehicle and/or state variables of a vehicle drive by a control device (1) e.g. control area network (CAN) bus. The parameter corresponding to the maximum instantaneous performance of the vehicle drive is displayed by a display device (3) e.g. head-up display, and the maximum instantaneous performance of the vehicle drive is assigned to a performance region that is displayed as the parameter corresponding to the performance of the vehicle drive. An independent claim is also included for a control device for determining instantaneous performance of a vehicle.
