The device (10) has an electrically non-conductive plate (1), under which an electrically conductive plate (3) lies. A test material (2) e.g. mortar, and the electrically conductive plate with the electrically non-conductive plate form a dielectric capacitor, where capacity of the capacitor is changed proportionally with a surface change of the material during melting of the material and capacity change is displayed. An electrode (8) is dipped into the material, and establishes an electrically conductive connection from the material to a capacity measuring arrangement (5).
