PRODUCTION OF ACID PROPIONATES

Propionic acid-containing composition (A) in solid and preferably pure form, comprises at least a metal compound (I). Propionic acid-containing composition (A) in solid and preferably pure form, comprises at least a metal compound (I) of formula ((M(n+))(H +>) x(CH 3CH 2C(O)O ->) (n+x)). M(n+) : n-valent alkalimetal- or alkaline earth metal cation; n : 1 or 2; and x : 0.25-5. Provided that when M(n+) is potassium, then x is not equal to 0.75-1.75. An independent claim is also included for the preparations of (A) comprising: either heating a neutral alkalimetal- and/or alkaline earth metal propionate and propionic acid in a molar ratio of 1:0.25 to 1:5 to give a homogeneous mixture and partially solidifying the homogeneous mixture, where the homogeneous mixture contains less than 1 wt.% of water; or heating a neutral alkalimetal- and/or alkaline earth metal propionate and propionic acid in a molar ratio of 1:0.25 to 1:5 to give a homogeneous mixture and crystallizing the homogeneous mixture, where the homogeneous mixture contains 1-15 wt.% of water and the molar ratio of the neutral alkali metal- and/or alkaline earth metal propionate to propionic acid is 1:0.75 to 1:1.75 if M(n+) is potassium.
