Method and device for contactless pile detection

The method involves metrologically detecting a vertically running section e.g. printing substrate pile, by a sensor (11) that is directed toward the section. The sensor is aligned in such a manner that the sensor is cocked to a normal of the section and makes an angle of 20 or 25 degrees with the normal. The sensor (11) and another sensor (12) are aligned at a common point on the section.
