In a machine tool, a movable member 8 is mounted for rectilinear motion with respect to a supporting member 1 by balls 5 disposed in a cage 12, the cage being located with respect to these members 1, 8 by a cable 14 which is secured at its ends to the members and passes over a cable roller 13 which is freely mounted at the end of the cage 12. A similar cable arrangement may be provided at the other end of the cage 12. The balls 5 run on chamfered surfaces 3, 4, 6, 7 on the members 1, 8 and the cage 12 is located in grooves 10, 11 therein. In a modification, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a roller cage 18 and cable roller 24 are disposed horizontally and the bearing surfaces comprise horizontal surfaces 21, 29, inclined surfaces 22 and 23 being provided merely to retain the balls. |
