A passive centralizer 100 for centering within a well includes an arm 180 which can be held in a retracted position by a retention mechanism. The arm 180 contains stored energy which is imparted when it is forced into the retracted position, such that release by the retention mechanism causes the arm 180 to expand radially outward. The arm 180 may be in the form a of a bow spring. The retention mechanism may include a collar 155 and deflectable deployment projections having raised teeth 152 which interface with the collar 155. Deflection of the deflection projections allows for the disengagement of at least a portion of the retention mechanism to allow for said radial expansion of the arm 180. |
