The temporary melt accumulator is formed as a buffer zone in the extruder output section(120) and comprises a continuation of the extruder barrel with a greater cross-section than that of the extruder barrel in its plasticizing zone(110). The accumulator zone has one or more screws forming extensions of the extruder screws(130,140). Each screw in the accumulator has a larger external cross-section than the screws in the plasticizing zone(110).
