In a gear transmission, pairs (24, 26, 28) of helical gears are rotatably mounted on a drive shaft (22) for axial movement on the drive shaft (22). The pairs (24, 26, 28) of helical gears mounted on the dri ve shaft engage corresponding pairs (42, 39, 37) of helical gears rotatably mounted on a driven shaft (35) for axial movement on the driven shaft (35). Retainer members (57a, 57b, 59a, 59b) are located adjacent each end of at least one of the shafts (22, 35) to restrict axial movement by helical gears caused by axial separation between pairs (24, 26, 28, 42, 39, 37) of helical gears resulting from commencement of rotation of the drive shaft (22). |
