Disclosed is a 4-substituted sulfonyl-1,2- dibromobenzene of the general formula (2): <IMG> wherein R is an aryl group of the formula (iv): <IMG> wherein R2 is one of a hydrogen atom and a substituent having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The 1,2-dibromobenzene compound is useful in preparing a substituted benzenedithiol metal complex represented by the general formula (1): <IMG> wherein M is a transition metal; A+ is a quaternary ammonium group; and R is as defined above, which in turn is useful as a singlet oxygen quencher or the like.
