A negative electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery, and a lithium ion secondary battery containing the negative electrode are provided to inhibit the exfoliation of a negative electrode active material from a negative electrode current collector. A negative electrode(12) for a lithium ion secondary battery comprises a negative electrode current collector(12a) which is a metallic plate; a first convex part(20) which is formed so as to be continuous from the surface of the negative electrode current collector toward the outer part of the negative electrode current collector; a pillar shaped body(12b) which is installed at the at least vertex part of the first convex part and comprises a negative electrode active material; and an exfoliation propagation hindrance part(21) which is installed at the at least some part of the surface of the first convex part to hinder the exfoliation from the first convex surface of the pillar shaped body due to the contraction or expansion of a negative electrode active material.
