A method and an apparatus for correcting a distorted image are provided to correct a distortion of an image obtained by a lens having an angle of view within 180. An apparatus for correcting a distorted image includes a register which stores a parameter for correcting a distorted image, a correction module which corrects the distorted image based on the parameter stored in the register, and a compensation module which compensates for image information of an area of the corrected image having no image information. The correction module establishes a z-coordinate of a distorted image plane displaying the distorted image based on an angle of a lens. The parameter for correcting the distorted image includes at least one of the angle of view information and focal distance information of the lens. The correction module includes a virtual lens spherical surface generator(300) which generates a virtual lens spherical surface based on the focal distance information of the lens, a distorted image plane establisher(302) which establishes the distorted image plane by using the virtual lens spherical surface and a z-coordinate by using the angle of view information of the lens, a virtual lens spherical surface transformer(304) which transforms the coordinate of the distorted image plane to the coordinate of the virtual lens spherical surface, a first correction plane transformer(306) which transforms the coordinate of the virtual lens spherical surface to a coordinate of a first correction plane where a z-coordinate is set by a focal distance, and a second correction plane transformer(308) which transforms the coordinate of the first correction plane transformer to a coordinate of a second correction plane scaled based on a size of the distorted image.
