PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extremely easy, inexpensive process for preparing polyarylene sulfide(PAS) wherein the obtained PAS retains a high melt viscosity, even when recycling and using an organic amide-based solvent having a pH of <8.5 which has been used for PAS synthesis. SOLUTION: In a process for preparing polyarylene sulfide, an alkaline metal sulfide is allowed to react with a dihaloaromatic compound in an organic amide- based solvent, polyarylene sulfide is separated from the obtained polyarylene sulfide slurry, the obtained liquid is distilled to recover the organic amide-based solvent, and the recovered organic amide-based solvent is recycled in the reaction to prepare polyarylene sulfide. When the recovered organic amide-based solvent has a pH of <8.5 (the pH is the value determined for a mixture obtained by adding the same weight of ion-exchange water to the solvent), from 0.03 to 2.0 pts.wt. ammonia or amine is added to the reaction system before or during the reaction per 100 pts.wt. recovered organic amide-based solvent. |
