A plunger (10) for use in forming parisons (15) in a blank mold (12) during the manufacturing of glass containers in a plunger cycling assembly (5) has a body (27) of a first material having a thermal conductivity for conduction of heat flow, wherein the body (27) has a tip region (25) and a cavity (30) extending along the longitudinal axis (L) therein. A neck region (18) is comprised of the neck contour wall (20) and the plunger tip region (25). In a first embodiment, an insert (35) of a second material having a lower thermal conductivity for conduction of heat flow than the first material is positioned within the cavity (30) to minimize the heat transfer from a molten gob to the plunger (10). In a second embodiment, there is a gap (55) between the insert (35) and the plunger cavity (30) to permit air flow through a passageway (57) from a bore (40) in a region closer to the center of the plunger (10) than the mold passageways (50, 52) and radial ports (46, 48) normally permit. |
