PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a total printing time while performing the efficient movement control of a carriage. SOLUTION: This serial printer decides the movement direction of the carriage for a subsequent printing pass following a current printing pass on the basis of a target stop position of the carriage for the current pass before the carriage comes to a halt. The serial printer has a first movement direction decision means, a first printing information computing means to compute printing information necessary for performing printing for a subsequent pass on the basis of the movement direction of the carriage decided on by the decision means, a second movement direction decision means to decide the movement direction of the carriage for the subsequent pass on the basis of the actual stop position where the carriage stops, a coincidence determination means to determine whether or not the movement directions of the carriage decided on by the first and second movement direction decision means coincide with each other, and a printing execution means to execute printing on the basis of printing information computed by the first printing information computing means when determining that the movement directions of the carriage coincide with each other.
