PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a holding method and a holding device capable of holding a flexible or long article without deforming it. SOLUTION: Electrodes 3 are connected to a power source by an electric means, the electric field or a flux 4 with the viscosity thereof changing according to the voltage is interposed between the electrodes 3 or around the electrodes 3, the electric field or the voltage is applied to the flux 4 via the electrodes 3, and the viscosity of the flux 4 is changed by changing the electric field or the voltage to hold the article 6. The electrodes 3 are facing electrodes, and the distance between the facing electrodes can be changed. The electrodes 3 may be formed by disposing interdigital electrodes facing each other. The electrodes may be of lattice shape or network shape.
