PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance in strong intermittent cutting etc. of a workpiece material that is susceptible to welding, such as a mild steel and a stainless steel. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool is formed of a tool substrate and the hard coating layer which consists of a lower layer and an upper layer and is vapor-deposited on a surface of the tool substrate. The lower layer is made of a Ti compound layer having a mean layer thickness of 3 to 20μm in total, and the upper layer is made of an aluminum oxide layer, a chrome oxide layer, and a chrome nitroxide layer. The chrome oxide layer contains a plurality of minute holes having a hole maximum width of 0.5 to 2.5μm with a porosity rate of 5 to 30%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
