A magnetic field (94) generated by at least one coil (14, 72) operatively associated with a first portion (76) of a vehicle (12) responsive to a first signal from a signal source (98) causes an eddy current (102) in at least one conductive element (80, 86, 88) operatively associated with or at least a part of a second portion of the vehicle (12). The at least one coil (14, 72) is operatively coupled to a portion (92) of the vehicle (12) susceptible to deformation responsive to a crash, and a circuit (96, 114, 294) operatively coupled to the at least one coil (14, 72) generates a second signal responsive to a self-impedance of the at least one coil (14, 72).
