PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detection device capable of improving reliability of the device by preventing malfunction when a magnetic field change detection element is broken or failed, and by preventing breakage or failure of a position detection device by allowing an eddy current to flow in the magnetic field change detection element, in the position detection device for detecting a relative position between a magnetic field generator and the magnetic field change detection element. SOLUTION: The sum of each signal from a plurality of magnetic field change detection elements 1, 2 arranged mutually separately, for outputting each signal corresponding to a distance to the magnetic field generator 7 is operated by a sum signal generation circuit 4, and the operated sun signal is output to a detection circuit 6. The detection circuit 6 detects fluctuation from a set value of the sum signal, and when the fluctuation continues as long as a prescribed time or longer, outputs a signal showing the effect to a control circuit 5, to thereby stop operation of the control circuit 5.
