A liquid crystal display device includes: an image display panel (2) formed by a light-transmissive liquid crystal display panel; and a backlight (3) for applying light from a rear surface side of the image display panel (2). The image display panel (2) and the backlight (3) sandwiches a light adjusting panel (1) formed by a transmissive liquid crystal display panel for performing gradation display based on luminance information contained in a video signal inputted to the image display panel (2). The size of the pixels constituting the light adjusting panel (1) is greater than the size of the pixels constituting the image display panel (2). The light adjusting panel (1) includes an intermediate layer (102) as a film (103) having one surface on which an image electrode (1a) is formed and the other surface on which a signal line (11) electrically connected to the pixel electrode (1a) is formed.
