<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is made more compact than before and can obtain a stable transfer state irrelevantly to monochrome mode and color mode even when the monochrome and color modes are selectively alternated. <P>SOLUTION: Photoreceptor drums 1a to 1c are arranged on nearly the same plane, where a movable support roller 21 is disposed upstream from the photoreceptor 1a to make an intermediate transfer belt 8 contact and leave the photoreceptor and a second support roller 22 is disposed between the photoreceptor 1c and photoreceptor 1d.
