<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent decrease in the contrast of display on a step face by appropriately regulating the relative relation of the step face of a layer thickness adjusting film and an alignment direction in an in-plane switching type transflective liquid crystal device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal layer between a substrate 15 and a counter substrate, in which the counter substrate is subjected to rubbing in an antiparallel direction of rubbing D<SB>R</SB>on the substrate 15, and a common electrode 22 and pixel electrodes 31 are formed on the substrate 15. The electrode 31 has slits 35 and electrode line portions 31a. A reflective display region R including a light reflecting film 36 and a transmissive display region T having no reflecting film 36 are formed in a sub-pixel P. An adjusting film 45 to adjust the liquid crystal layer thickness between the region R and the region T is formed on the counter substrate. The adjusting film 45 has a step face 45a in the boundary portion between the region R and the region T. The rubbing direction on the counter substrate is controlled to a direction where ends of liquid crystal molecules in a forward side of the rubbing direction are moved toward the step face 45a in the transmissive display region when a voltage is applied to the electrodes 22, 31. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
