PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique suitable for reducing exhaust gas emissions, in a control system for a spark ignition type internal combustion engine advancing ignition timing rather than MBT. SOLUTION: In the control system for the internal combustion engine excessively advancing the ignition timing before the MBT, when the ignition timing is excessively advanced, combustion promoting processing for improving the combustion speed of air/fuel mixture is combinedly carried out at the same time, thereby decreasing unburning fuel ingredients discharged from a cylinder while suppressing great advancing of the ignition timing.
