<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress coloring during black display on a transflective lateral electric field type liquid crystal device. <P>SOLUTION: Disclosed is the transflective lateral electric field type liquid crystal device, which has a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a device substrate and a color filter substrate. A first polarizer having a first axis of transmission is disposed outside the device substrate, and a second polarizer having a second axis of transmission is disposed outside the color filter substrate. A retardation layer which has a slow axis is disposed in a position corresponding to a reflective display region on a liquid crystal layer side of the color filter substrate. The first axis of transmission and the second axis of transmission are orthogonal to each other, the first axis of transmission is parallel to a liquid crystal alignment axis, and the angle between the first axis of transmission and the slow axis is 20 to 25° or 60 to 75°. Particularly, in this liquid device, the phase difference (Rlc) of the liquid crystal layer in the reflective display area is about <1/4 time as large as a wavelength, and the phase difference (Rf) of the retardation layer is ≤1/2 as large as the wavelength.
