PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machining method and a machining apparatus, which are specialized to a new construction of a cylinder and also by which the arraying machining of this periodic construction (nanoperiodic groove and dimple) can be performed with high accuracy and efficiently even to a multi-cylinder cylinder.

SOLUTION: The periodic construction MK or the like is machined on the slide surface 60A of a piston from the top dead center P1 to the bottom dead center P2 on which the piston is moved back and forth on the inner peripheral surface in a single-cylinder cylinder C1 or a multi-cylinder cylinder C2 and the density of periodic grooves in the vicinity of the top dead center and the vicinity of the bottom dead center is made dense and the density of the periodic grooves on the way is made coarse.
