PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a spline of a shaft member, in which the spline having high accuracy by making small to a diameter-enlarging amount of OBD (Over Ball Diameter) generated in a spline basic part and an diameter-enlarging range in the axial direction can be formed for the shaft member. SOLUTION: In the method for forming the spline 9 for giving the vibration in the axial direction by mutually repeating movements of advancing and retreating to a die 21 as a working tool from the tip end part to the root part to a spline-forming scheduled partαon the outer peripheral surface of the shaft 6, when the basic part 9a of the spline is formed, the difference between the advancing amount A<SB>1</SB>and the retreating amount B<SB>1</SB>of the die 21, that is, the working amount (A<SB>1</SB>-B<SB>1</SB>) per one time vibration is made smaller than the difference between the advancing amount A and the retreating amount B of the die 21 at the time of forming the other portion of the spline 9, that is, smaller than the working amount (A-B) in the axial direction with one time vibration.
