The invention relates to a distributed arithmetic coding method of a first data source (X) having an associated entropy (H), and of at least a second data source (Y) statistically correlated to the first (X), in which to each of said sources (X, Y) is associated a respective sequence of symbols (X<SUB>0</SUB>, X<SUB>1</SUB>,..., X<SUB>N-1</SUB>; Y<SUB>0</SUB>, Y<SUB>1</SUB>,..., Y<SUB>N-1</SUB>), in which each symbol belongs to an M-ary alphabet, wherein M can be different for the two sources (X, Y), with associated a group of probabilities (p<SUB>1</SUB>,..., p<SUB>M</SUB>) in which the values are included within the interval from 0 to1. Said method is characterized by the fact of coding the first source (X) ambiguously with a bit rate less than its entropy (H). The invention further relates to corresponding decoding methods. |
