PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the service life of a light source lamp in a projection type image display device which can control the brightness of the light source lamp in accordance with the features of image to be displayed. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device is provided with a cooling fan for the light source lamp for cooling the light source lamp, a decision means for deciding the brightness of the picture based on a picture signal, a first control means for controlling a light emission intensity of the light source lamp based on a decision result of the decision means and a second control means for controlling a rotation speed of the cooling fan for the light source lamp based on the decision result of the decision means. The first control means controls the light emission intensity of the light source lamp so that the brighter the picture is, the more the emission intensity of the light source lamp becomes. The second control means controls the rotation speed of the cooling fan for the light source lamp so that the brighter the picture is, the higher the rotation speed of the cooling fan for the light source lamp becomes.
