PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyisocyanate-modified polycarboxylic acid, by converting an anhydride group-free polycarboxylic acid with an isocyanate functional compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyisocyanate-modified polycarboxylic acid comprises reacting (A) an anhydride group-free polycarboxylic acid component with (B) an isocyanate functional component having an (average) isocyanate functionality of at least 1.8 at an equivalent ratio of carboxylic acid groups to isocyanate groups of 1.2:1 to 120:1. The polyisocyanate-modified polycarboxylic acid is solid at a temperature of lower than 40°C and liquid at a temperature of higher than 130°C, and has an average carboxylic acid functionality of at least 1.8, a free carboxylic acid group content of 4.0 mol% to 80.0 mol%, and an amide group content of 0.4 mol% to 32.5 mol%. The compound characteristically has low melt viscosity and forms a coated material excellent in gloss, mechanical characteristics, and chemical resistance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
