Disclosed is an optical recording medium on/from which high-density optical information is recorded/reproduced by short wavelength light such as blue laser. Specifically disclosed is an optical recording medium having a substrate and a recording layer formed on the substrate and capable of recording or reproducing information by irradiation of light. This optical recording medium is characterized in that the recording layer contains a cyanine dye represented by the following general formula [I]. (In the formula [I], A¹ and B¹ independently represent an optionally substituted aromatic ring, and at least one aromatic ringof A¹ and B¹ contains a nitrogen atom; R¹ and R² independently represent a substituent, and R¹ and/or R² may be bonded with another cation; X¹, X², X³ and X⁴ independently represent an organic group, and X¹ and X² and/or X³ and X⁴ may combine together to form a ring structure; Y¹ represents a hydrogen atom or an organic group; and Z^- represents an anion.)
