An optical sensor head (4) is located close to the row of needles being monitored. It includes a light exit and/or entry window. A cleaning unit (8) associated with the window removes deposits. The cleaning unit is integrated into the sensor head housing. It has a channel directing air at the window. The cleaning unit includes a cover over the window, which can be removed when required. The cover is a tear-off sheet. It is a transparent tape unwound from a spool, located in a replaceable cassette, which also includes the sensor head.
