Provided is a plasma display device comprising a cumulative addition circuit (48A) for adding a predetermined value cumulatively at every predetermined unit times while a panel (10) is being energized, and a decision circuit (49) for deciding the properties of an image to be displayed on the panel (10). The cumulative addition circuit (48A) changes the predetermined value in accordance with the decision result of the decision circuit (49), and outputs, when the cumulative addition result exceeds a threshold value, a signal indicating the excess to a timing generating circuit (45). On the basis of the signal outputted from the cumulative addition circuit (48A), the timing generating circuit (45) outputs a timing signal for changing the voltage value of an initializing voltage of a rising lamp waveform to be applied to a scanning electrode for an initializing period, to a scanning electrode driving circuit (43).
