PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time of press forming an optical element and to decrease the dispersion of the central thickness. SOLUTION: A desired optical element is formed by pressing a thermally softened glass raw material 3 with a pair of molds 1, 2. The method for forming the optical element comprises the following steps: a prediction step wherein, before actually pressing the glass raw material 3, the shape of the glass raw material 3, the heating temperature of the molds 1, 2, and the pressure for pressing the glass raw material 3 are predicted by simulation so that the desired central thickness is given for the press-molded optical element; a pressing step for practically pressing the glass raw material 3 according to the predicted shape of the glass raw material 3, heating temperature, and pressing pressure; and a distinction step for detecting the central thickness of the pressed optical element and distinguishing whether the optical element is a conforming article or not based on the detected central thickness.
