A door closer 1 includes an anchor assembly 10 for mounting on a door frame, an actuator assembly 30 for mounting within the thickness of a door and an operating member 22 coupled by an articulated link 20 to the anchor assembly 10 and mounted for a range of movements between a retracted position and an extended position. A resilient driving apparatus 45 exerts a closing force on the operating member 22. A damper mechanism 50 is operatively connected to the operating member 22 so as to damp movement of the operating member 22 at least in a door closing direction. The damper mechanism includes a piston 51 in a cylinder 52 dividing the cylinder 52 into two chambers 65, 66, the piston 51 and the cylinder 52 relatively moving as the door is opened and closed, so that fluid flows from one chamber 65, 66 to the other, depending upon the direction of door movement. Damping is adjusted by an adjustable throttle 71 that restricts fluid flow from one of the chambers 65, 66 to the other as the door is drawn closed. The throttle 71 includes two elements 72, 74 in combination, one of the elements 72 includes a fluid flow path provided by groove 73, which extends around and along an axis about which and along which the one element 72 is moveable, the other of the two elements including a port 74 with which the groove 73 is brought into registry to provide a required fluid flow restriction. The relative separation of the two elements may be adjustable by an externally accessible adjustment member 78 to adjust the length of the fluid restriction path and adjust the flow restriction. |
