PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend life of an image carrier by removing talc and paper powder, etc. adhered on the surface without grinding the image carrier. SOLUTION: A pad 22 and a cleaning blade 38 to be depressed on a photoreceptor drum 12 are arranged on the downstream side in the process direction (direction of an arrow A) of a transfer position of a toner image of the photoreceptro drum 12. In the pad 22, an elastic support 22 is attached to a rigid base 44 and nonwoven fabric 44 consisting of ultrafine fibers is further attached so as to cover the elastic support 22. Thrust of the pad 22 to the photoreceptor drum 12 is set so as to become maximum at the lowermost stream side in the process direction and to gradually decrease from the downstream side to the upstream side in the process direction. After transferring a toner image, the paper powder and the talc, etc. on the surface of the photoreceptor drum 12 are dammed by the pad 22 and transfer residual toner is removed by the cleaning blade 38. At termination of image formation, the photoreceptor drum 12 reversely rotates in the direction of an arrow B and crud is broken between the pad 22 and the photoreceptor drum 22 and thus, clogging of the pad 22 is prevented.
