This invention provides composite graphite particles, which are useful for a rechargeable battery negative electrode having a high battery capacitance and having good charge discharge cycle characteristics and excellent charge characteristics, and a paste for a negative electrode using the composite graphite, a negative electrode, and a lithium rechargeable battery. The composite graphite particles comprise a core material and a surface layer. The core material comprises a graphite having an interlayer distance (d value) of not more than 0.337 nm in d(002) plane. The surface layer is formed of a graphite which, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, has an intensity ratio ID/IG (R value) of not less than 0.3, wherein ID represents a peak intensity in the wavelength range of 1300 to 1400 cm-1 and IG represents a peak intensity in the wavelength range of 1580 to 1620 cm-1. When a product obtained by mixing the composite graphite particles with a binder and press molding the mixture into a product having a density of 1.55 to 1.65g/cm3 is subjected to XRD measurement, the I110/I004 ratio is not less than 0.15 wherein I110 represents a peak intensity on (110) plane of the graphite crystal and I004 represents a peak intensity on (004) plane. |
