PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner capable of automatically releasing initial setting, and capable of preventing angular restriction on mounting. SOLUTION: A plunger 4 and a return spring 6 pushing the plunger 4 outward are assembled in a cylinder chamber 2. A small diameter shaft 21 is provided at the end of a plunger 4, a pin hole 22 penetrating through a radial direction is formed at the end of a housing 1, and a set pin 23 is inserted. The set pin 23 is energized to the radial direction external side by an elastic member 25, the plunger 4 is held in a pushed state by the fitting of the end of the set pin 23 pushed in the radial direction inner side against the elasticity of the elastic member 25 with a step 24 of a small diameter shaft 21 of the plunger 4, and the chain tensioner is attached. After attaching the chain tensioner, an engine is started, the plunger 4 is pushed by a tensed chain 32, and the set pin 23 is moved to the radial direction external side by pushing of the elastic member 25, and the initial setting of the plunger 4 is released.
