PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a variable valve gear capable of detecting failure of the variable valve gear in an early stage and preventing interference of a piston and a valve. SOLUTION: A micro computer 1 calculates control quantity of a motor 4 of a valve lift control mechanism 2 based on input internal combustion engine operation control (engine rotation speed, intake air quantity, accelerator opening, vehicle speed, and the like), and outputs DIR signal directing rotation direction of the motor 4 and PWM signal which is pulse signal less than duty 100% of predetermined control cycle. A motor drive circuit 13 outputs pulse outputs A, B driving the motor 4 based on DIR signal and PWM signal. A monitor circuit 10 monitors pulse output B driving the motor 4 in a regular rotation direction, and judges failure of the motor drive circuit 13 if the output B does not change during monitoring time established longer than pulse cycle.
