The object of the invention, to develop a rotary piston machine which is to be configured as a prime mover or a machine and comprising two piston mounts which are mounted rotatably on an axle and can perform a relative movement, wherein piston mounts are connected to a straight-line thrust-crank mechanism which serves to generate a relative movement and causes a conversion of a uniform straight-line movement of the piston mount into a non-uniform one, has been achieved in that a centre axis of each piston liner lies at right angles on a diameter of a piston mount and each piston mount is connected fixedly to elliptical gearwheels which are rotated by 90° with respect to one another and the gearwheels which are rotated by 90° with respect to the former counter to one another as mating gears are connected fixedly to an output shaft, wherein said gearwheels are firstly mounted rotatably on the axle at the point of intersection of the smallest and greatest diameters and secondly are connected to the output shaft, and the working pistons in the piston liners of one piston mount are connected to the other piston mount via hinged levers and the working pistons in the piston liners of the other piston mount are connected to the first piston mount via hinged levers.
